PD Press Release: Robbery 091019

On 01/05/17 at approximately 9:51 P.M., a Dinuba Police Officer walked into a gas station located in the 1200 Block of North Alta Avenue, at which time he observed two male subjects holding the store clerk at gunpoint. Both subjects were armed with handguns and began firing at the officer. The two subjects fled from the store and one of the subjects got into a getaway vehicle that was parked outside. The officer gave chase after one of the suspects on foot as the suspect continued firing at the officer. The officer was able to return fire during the foot chase. Shortly one of the suspects was struck several times and was transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. During the robbery the store clerk was assaulted by the suspects but was treated for his injuries and released. The officer did not sustain any injuries. The deceased subject was later identified as 20 year old Luis Vargas.

The remaining suspects later fled on foot from the suspect vehicle a short while later. With the assistance of Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, Reedley Police Department, Farmersville Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, a second suspect was located hiding in the backyard of a residence and was taken into custody.
